DISCOVER MALTA

Located in the Mediterranean, just south of Sicily, the Maltese Archipelago consists of three main islands; Malta, Gozo and Comino, and the smaller uninhabited islands of Cominotto and Filfla. Less than 3 hours flying time from most European cities, and only 93km from Sicily, Malta is the ideal short-haul holiday destination.

In Malta you can explore over 7000 years of history, yet live passionately in the present. You’ll span the millennia with an astonishing array of things to discover. And wherever you go, the Island’s scenery and architecture provide a stunning backdrop. Delve into the Islands’ mysterious prehistory, retrace the footsteps of St. Paul or see where the Knights of St. John defended Christianity. Visit locations where Oscar-winning blockbusters were filmed, or go off the beaten track into ancient villages still tied to the traditional way of life. Marvel at the fireworks and revelry of the summertime feasts, or simply enjoy the unique countryside, featuring over 600 different species of flowering plants.

MALTA
The largest Island in the Archipelago is Malta, from which the archipelago takes its name. Valletta, the capital, is the cultural, administrative and commercial centre. Malta is well served with natural harbours, the largest of which is Valletta Grand Harbour, which has a frequent ferry service between Sicily and Malta, and Italy and Malta. Malta’s International Airport is only 5km from Valletta, and has flight connections from over 45 destinations.

Malta has neither rivers nor mountains, but is characterised by a series of low flat-topped hills, with terraced fields on the side of their slopes. Malta’s coastline is well indented with bays, creeks, several sandy beaches and rocky coves.

GOZO
The second largest island, Gozo is topographically quite different from Malta. Quaintly attractive for its less industrialised way of life, its coastline has picturesque bays, coves and rugged cliffs penetrated by steep gorges hewn by rivers in the ice-age. Gozo can be reached from Malta (by ferry) from Cirkewwa.

COMINO
The smallest inhabited island in the archipelago, Comino’s population consists of a handful of full time residents, and is a car-free island. With stunning sea, it is home to the famous ‘Blue Lagoon’. Adventure Campsite Malta organise day trips to this beautiful island.

CLIMATE
With a wonderful warm climate, the Maltese Islands are a popular holiday destination. Winters are mild with the occasional short chilly spell and an average of 5-6 hours of sunshine. Summers are hot, dry and very sunny, with almost 12 hours of sunshine at the height of summer. Day time temperatures are often mitigated by the cooling sea breezes.

Annual rainfall is low, averaging 57.8cm per year. The length of the dry season is longer than in neighbouring Italy. Sea bathing is quite possible well into the ‘winter’ months, and the peak beach-season can last until mid to late October.
